Mozambique state debt and Portuguese credit support
Overview
Mozambique is experiencing significant financial pressure as state debt owed to the private sector for public works reaches approximately €1.17 billion. The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) has called for more predictable payment mechanisms to prevent business failures.
In response to economic conditions, Portugal is fast-tracking a €500 million credit line designed to support Portuguese companies operating within Mozambique. João Ferreira, Portugal’s Secretary of State for the Economy, noted that this mechanism may be operationalized in phases to ensure funds reach companies while full implementation procedures are completed.
