Preventive maintenance on two bridges along the MS-040 highway near Santa Rita do Pardo, managed by the concessionaire Caminhos da Celulose, led to significant traffic restrictions. Starting in early September, heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses were prohibited from using the affected stretch, while light vehicles were permitted to pass via a ‘stop and go’ system. In response to these restrictions, farmers and residents organized a protest by blocking the highway between Santa Rita do Pardo and Campo Grande using tractors and large vehicles. Demonstrators are demanding the installation of a mobile metal bridge to alleviate what they claim are supply shortages and harm to local workers. While the Highway Military Police Battalion attempted to negotiate the release of traffic, the concessionaire maintained that the interventions were emergency measures necessary for safety. Structural reinforcement works are now scheduled to begin on Monday, October 12, for the bridges located at kilometers 205 and 223. These works follow inspections that identified a risk of collapse caused by structural wear from years of overweight truck traffic. The project, overseen by the State Agency for the Regulation of Public Services of Mato Grosso do Sul (AGEMS), will include reinforcing foundations, installing metal structures, and widening lanes. The work is expected to be completed by November 30. During this period, heavy vehicles remain prohibited, and drivers traveling between São Paulo, Bataguassu, and Campo Grande are advised to detour via BR-267 and BR-163.
