MSG Prime Minister’s Cup football tournament
Overview
The 2026 MSG Prime Minister’s Cup football tournament commenced at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, Fiji, involving teams from Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, and New Caledonia.
In the opening matches, Papua New Guinea defeated Vanuatu 2-1. A high-scoring match between Fiji and the Solomon Islands ended in a 3-3 draw; Fiji played much of the match with ten men following a red card to Tevita Waranivalu, but the Solomon Islands managed to equalize during injury time.
As the round-robin tournament progressed, the Solomon Islands women's national team prepared to face Fiji. The Solomon Islands entered the match following a 1-1 draw against Vanuatu, while Fiji sought its first victory after facing losses to Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu.
Fiji eventually secured the 2026 MSG Prime Minister’s Cup title with a 1-0 victory over defending champions Vanuatu. Thomas Dunn scored the decisive goal in the 10th minute and was awarded the Men’s Golden Ball. This victory marks Fiji’s first regional football title since 2000 and their first since the tournament was rebranded from the Melanesia Cup to the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup. In recognition of the win, Fiji Football Association President Rajesh Patel announced a $1,000 cash bonus for each player and team official.
