Following the December 29, 2024, crash of Jeju Air flight 7C2216 at Muan International Airport, which resulted in 179 deaths, investigations have focused on safety regulation violations and government negligence. On the 600th day after the accident, bereaved families held a press conference to demand accountability. The families accused the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of providing false information regarding debris clearance, noting that approximately 1,740 pieces of victim remains and thousands of personal belongings were later discovered despite claims that 99% of debris had been cleared shortly after the crash. Subsequent investigations by ~~police~~ the Special Investigation Team of the Korean National Police Agency revealed that seven officials from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport have been referred to prosecutors. These officials are accused of ~~fabricating~~ creating and distributing false official documents to claim a localizer facility met safety ~~standards when it actually~~ standards. Investigators found that the officials allegedly released press materials on December 30 and 31, 2024, claiming compliance with safety regulations despite knowing the localizer was installed on a concrete mound. This installation violated International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) ~~guidelines. The aircraft reportedly struck a concrete mound where the facility was installed, a violation of requirements that~~ guidelines, which require such navigation facilities to be constructed of breakable materials to minimize impact damage. Police assert the Ministry intentionally omitted unfavorable regulations and selectively interpreted rules to protect the agency from liability. The investigation into the original installation and full accountability is expected to continue through the end of the year.
