MUFG blockchain JGB repo settlement experiment

Overview

Four entities within the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG)—including MUFG Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Morgan Stanley Securities, and Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking—have launched a proof-of-concept to settle Japanese government bond (JGB) repo transactions using the Canton Network blockchain platform.

The initiative seeks to transition the transaction lifecycle to a common digital infrastructure to enable 24/7 real-time intraday settlement, increased automation, and improved capital efficiency. Rather than tokenizing the bonds themselves, the project focuses on synchronizing JGB book-entry records with blockchain technology. The experiment includes testing delivery-versus-payment settlement by utilizing tokenized deposits or stablecoins for the cash component to ensure simultaneous settlement of both securities and cash legs.

Supported by Digital Asset and Progmat, the project aligns with the Payment Innovation Project pilot program established by Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) in February 2026 to explore advanced payment technologies.
