Muğla newborn calf mortality reduction project

Overview

The Muğla Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry launched the ‘Newborn Calf Care Project’ to increase livestock productivity by reducing calf mortality rates across 13 districts. The initiative aims to lower mortality from the current 10% to an initial target of below 5%, with a long-term goal of 1%.

Supported by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Muğla Governor's Office, the project utilizes specialized teams to provide on-site interventions within the first 24 hours of birth. These services include umbilical cord disinfection, septicemia vaccinations, serum applications, and colostrum quality testing. Producers also receive practical training on essential newborn care.

During the first implementation phase, running from August 31 to September 11, 2026, approximately 30 teams have been operating in the field. A dedicated hotline received 350 reports during its first five days, with 330 valid calls addressed by field teams. Following this initial period, a second phase of the project is planned for the spring of 2027.
