Road accidents in Greece, June‑July June–August 2026
The surge in serious traffic incidents across Greece continued through late July. A 7-year-old Moldovan girl, the sole survivor of the 15 July multi-vehicle collision on the provincial road Poligýrou–Agios Nikolaos in Chalkidiki, showed further health improvement on 24 July. Doctors reduced her sedative medication, noted responses to environmental stimuli and said full extubation could follow if progress continues. On 28 July, a 27-year-old motorcyclist identified as Dimitris died after his bike left the Machis road in Malia, Crete, striking a wall. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities opened an investigation into the crash, and a funeral service was scheduled for 29 July. These incidents add to earlier reports of a 15-year-old rider killed in Thessaloniki, a family of four lost on the Polygyrou–Agios Nikolaos road, a heavy-truck collision near the Ancient Nemea interchange, a fire-related crash on the Thessaloniki-Serres highway, and a fatal crash in the Konia area of Fokida. Investigations remain open for several accidents, while the surviving Moldovan child’s condition continues to improve. By mid-August, the surviving Moldovan girl, Patrizia, was cleared for discharge following intensive medical treatment and surgery in Thessaloniki. The Moldovan Consulate coordinated her repatriation to Chisinau via a specialized ambulance and a medical team. In late August, a memorial service (trisagio) was organized in Chalkidiki to honor the family killed in the July head-on collision, which included a 35-year-old father, a 28-year-old mother, and their 6-month-old infant. A small chapel has been erected at the accident site, where mourners have left candles and a doll believed to belong to Patrizia.
