Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL), operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), will begin a phased redevelopment of the North Section of Terminal 1B in January 2027. The project is driven by safety concerns regarding the nearly 60-year-old infrastructure, a risk highlighted by a fire incident at the terminal in April 2026. The first phase involves demolishing the North Section, which accounts for approximately one-third of Terminal 1's capacity. While this will temporarily affect about 5 million passengers annually, the redevelopment is projected to increase the terminal’s annual capacity from 15 million to 20 million passengers. To support this transition, MIAL plans to invest ₹2,000 crore in airside projects, including new taxiways and expanded apron areas. To manage capacity, airlines have the option to relocate operations to the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Following intervention by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, a joint working group was established to coordinate the renovation. Major carriers have now formalized phased relocation plans to NMIA. Air India Express is scheduled to begin its transition in December 2026 with four daily domestic flights. By January 2027, the airline plans to move services to Oman and potentially Kuwait, followed by a phased shift of West Asia routes including Jeddah, Riyadh, Dammam, Doha, Muscat, and Sharjah, with the goal of completing the transition by the IATA Northern Summer 2027 season. IndiGo will commence international operations at NMIA in February 2027, progressively transferring 12 daily international departures from CSMIA to destinations such as Bahrain, Riyadh, Dammam, Jeddah, Madinah, Kuwait, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Muscat, Dhaka, and Jakarta. The airline also plans to launch a new daily service to Kathmandu, aiming for a total international network of 12 destinations at NMIA by July 2027.
