Mahela Jayawardene stepped down as head coach of the Mumbai Indians on October 17, 2026, following a ninth place finish in the 2026 season. His departure ended a decade long association with the franchise. Nita Ambani praised his “calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game,” while noting that a season review suggested a fresh approach was necessary. The search for a successor initially faced challenges as high profile candidates, including Rahul Dravid, Adam Gilchrist, and Eoin Morgan, reportedly declined the role. On October 23, 2026, the franchise appointed former West Indies all rounder Kieron Pollard as the new head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. Pollard, who has been with the team since 2010 as a player and most recently as a batting coach, was selected due to his deep understanding of the team’s culture and identity. Following Pollard’s appointment, the franchise announced a significant restructuring of the men’s coaching staff. This overhaul included parting ways with fast bowling coach Lasith Malinga, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach Carl Hopkinson. To complete the new technical team, the franchise appointed former Indian batter Robin Uthappa as batting coach and Mitchell McClenaghan as bowling coach. Additionally, T. Dilip joins as fielding coach, while Dhawal Kulkarni has been named development bowling coach. Many of the new appointees, including Pollard, Uthappa, and McClenaghan, have previous history with the Mumbai Indians franchise. ~~Pollard’s first major task involves finalizing player retentions ahead of~~ On October 30, 2026, reports indicated that Rohit Sharma is set to return as the ~~IPL 2027 auction scheduled~~ team captain for ~~December.~~ the 2027 season, accepting an offer to take over leadership from Hardik Pandya.
