Actor Imran Khan has filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court seeking an urgent stay on a ‘Leave India’ notice issued by the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO). The notice requires Khan, a United States citizen and Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, to depart the country by October 28. This follows his October 10 detention by Mumbai Police during a protest at August Kranti Maidan, organized by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Khan’s detention and subsequent exit order followed a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that Khan’s participation in political agitation violated immigration laws. While Union Minister Chirag Paswan and actor Raza Murad characterized foreign national involvement in internal affairs as “unacceptable,” filmmaker Kiran Rao and several opposition leaders have defended Khan, citing his long-standing ties to India. Khan’s legal team describes the departure order as “illegal, perverse, drastic and bad in law,” arguing it was issued without a prior inquiry, a show-cause notice, or a meaningful opportunity to be heard. The petition contends that the FRRO failed to specify the exact nature of the alleged violations of the Immigration and Foreigners Act and failed to consider Khan’s lifelong residency rights. His counsel maintains that OCI status does not prohibit participation in peaceful protests. In a parallel development, the FRRO has issued a show-cause notice to Khan, requesting justification as to why his OCI registration should not be cancelled due plea, Khan seeks to his protest involvement; he has 15 days quash the order and requests an interim stay to respond. Union Minister Chirag Paswan has characterized prevent deportation or the involvement issuance of foreign nationals in India’s internal affairs as “unacceptable.” a Look Out Circular (LOC).
