The Municipality of Ioannina has implemented several local subsidy programs. In October 2026, the municipality approved a contract to continue subsidizing monthly unlimited bus passes for University of Ioannina students. This agreement with City KTEL Ioannina aims to maintain the monthly cost at 20 euros, reduced from 35 euros, for approximately 14,954 students through September 2027. This marks the third consecutive year of the subsidized transit card program. The 15-euro monthly reduction is achieved through a joint effort where the Municipality of Ioannina provides a 10-euro subsidy and Urban KTEL Ioannina provides a 5-euro discount. University Rector Professor Anna K. Batistatou noted that the initiative “substantially reduces daily commuting costs and supports student welfare by easing the cost of living for those studying away from home.” During the same period, the municipality also approved 20,500 euros in funding for six local amateur sports clubs for the final quarter of 2026. The largest allocation of 12,500 euros was directed to PAS Giannina, marking the first phase of municipal financial support for the club.
