On August 5, 2024, 25-year-old Nilda Müge Şahin was shot and killed outside a pharmacy in the Şişli district of Istanbul. The suspect, identified as her former boyfriend Nazir Ilgın, allegedly approached her on a motorcycle and opened fire. Despite receiving emergency medical care, Şahin died from her injuries. Police launched a search for Ilgın following the release of security camera footage showing the attack. The incident has drawn significant public scrutiny due to Ilgın’s criminal history; he was previously convicted in 2020 for an attempted murder of a nurse. Although sentenced to 14 years for that assault, he had been released under judicial control prior to the fatal shooting of Şahin, who had filed for domestic violence protection nine days earlier. A restraining order had been served to him on August 2. Following a manhunt, police apprehended 35-year-old Nazir Ilgın in ~~a forest~~ the Ayazağa Forest in the Sarıyer district. He was reportedly spotted by Şahin’s sister while she was visiting her sister’s grave. During his time in hiding, Ilgın reportedly survived by purchasing food and water from local markets. In his police statement, Ilgın claimed he was intoxicated and initially did not intend to kill Şahin, but fired at her from behind while following her on a motorcycle. He also expressed intentions of self-harm if not caught. He has since been formally arrested on charges of ‘intentional killing of a woman’ and referred to the Istanbul Justice Palace.
