Murder of quilombola leader Mãe Bernadete

Overview

Following the August 17, 2023, assassination of Maria Bernadete Pacífico Moreira, a prominent quilombola leader and ialorixá, in the Pitanga dos Palmares community, several individuals have been convicted for their roles in the crime.

Josevan Dionísio dos Santos, also known as ‘BZ’, was sentenced to 28 years in prison. Prosecutors stated the murder was motivated by the victim’s opposition to expanding drug trafficking in the region. The defendant reportedly entered the victim's home and executed her with 25 gunshots.

Sérgio Ferreira de Jesus was subsequently sentenced to 23 years and nine months for his involvement in planning the attack. Evidence established that de Jesus helped perpetrators avoid security cameras by providing an optimal route to the residence and retained the victim's mobile phone after the crime.

De Jesus is the fourth individual convicted in connection with the murder. Other convicted parties include Arielson da Conceição dos Santos, who received 40 years, and Marílio dos Santos, who received 29 years but is deceased. One suspect, Ydney Carlos Santos de Jesus, remains pending trial.
