Musango matusadonaensis discovery in Zimbabwe

Overview

An international team of paleontologists announced the identification of a new Late Triassic sauropodomorph, Musango matusadonaensis, from a well‑preserved skeleton recovered on the shores of Lake Kariba in northern Zimbabwe. The animal lived about 210 million years ago, measured roughly 4.5 metres in length, weighed around 222 kilograms, and was likely omnivorous. Bone analysis suggests the individual was about eight years old at death and had recovered from a serious injury or infection.

The find, published in the Journal of Systematic Palaeontology, represents the fifth dinosaur species formally named from Zimbabwe. Researchers from the United Kingdom, South Africa and Zimbabwe highlighted that the discovery challenges the earlier view of a uniform early southern‑African dinosaur fauna, instead indicating a patchwork of distinct ecosystems across ancient Gondwana. Lead author Professor Paul Barrett described the specimen as evidence that early dinosaur diversification in the region is far more complex than previously thought, calling the find only the “tip of the iceberg” for understanding the continent’s prehistoric life.
