Mushroom foraging in Poland involves identifying edible species while navigating significant safety and regulatory risks. Experts highlight the parasol mushroom (Czubajka kania) and various honey fungus (Opieńki) varieties as notable edible species. To avoid poisoning, foragers are cautioned against mistaking species like the death cap (Amanita phalloides) for edible ones, and are warned that testing toxicity with onions or silver spoons is “ineffective and dangerous.” As the picking season begins, police have issued updated safety warnings to prevent individuals from becoming lost. Authorities note that even experienced foragers can lose orientation, especially as temperatures drop and evening approaches. To mitigate these risks, police recommend carrying a fully charged mobile phone, a flashlight, and reflective elements. Foragers are advised to avoid solo trips, inform relatives of their planned routes and expected return times, and contact emergency services via 112 if lost. In Lubartów, local police have expanded these recommendations, urging pickers to carry power banks and wear bright clothing or reflective vests to remain visible to rescuers. They also advise foragers to return before dark and to park vehicles responsibly to ensure forest roads remain accessible for emergency services. Foraging remains subject to strict environmental and legal constraints. While personal collection is generally permitted in state forests, certain areas are strictly off-limits, including forest plantations up to 4 meters in height, experimental areas, seed stands, animal sanctuaries, river sources, and erosion-prone zones. Additionally, picking branches, moss, or bark is prohibited and can result in fines under the Code of Petty Offenses. Optimal growth remains tied to environmental conditions, specifically daytime temperatures between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius and sustained soil moisture. Foragers are advised to seek moist, well-ventilated areas, as standing water can cause mushrooms to rot prematurely.
