Afyonkarahisar is developing into continues to develop as a Turkish sports tourism hub, utilizing its thermal resources and modern infrastructure to host international events. A central component of this growth is the Afyonkarahisar Motor Sports Center. The region is set to host hosting the MXGP World Motocross Championship for the ninth consecutive year in 2026. The upcoming event, scheduled for September 5-6, is expected to feature features approximately 150 elite riders from 25 different countries, including factory teams from major global brands. Notable competitors expected to participate include world champions Jeffrey Herlings, Tim Gajser, Gajser—who holds five world titles across the MXGP and MX2 categories—and two-time MXGP champion Romain Febvre. The official opening ceremony for the MXGP Turkey was held at the Afyonkarahisar Motor Sports Center, attended by local officials, athletes, and international federation representatives. Governor Dr. Naci Aktaş noted that hosting such large-scale international organizations contributes significantly to the city’s tourism and international visibility. Running alongside the championship is the five-day NG Afyon Motofest, which offers approximately 50 activities and 14 concerts. To support the local sports sector, the MXGP Academy also operates in the area to train young athletes, contributing to long-term infrastructural and educational development.
