Myanmar civil war death toll exceeds 100,000

A United Nations Human Rights Office report released in late June documented at least 702 civilian deaths – including women and children – caused by Myanmar’s armed forces over a six‑month period surrounding the disputed elections, with airstrikes responsible for most casualties in Sagaing, Tabayin and near a school.

Subsequent data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED) showed the cumulative death toll had risen above 100,000 since the 2021 military coup, making it Asia’s deadliest ongoing war. The United Nations estimates more than 3.7 million people are internally displaced and one in five faces food insecurity. Over 1,200 armed groups are active, and Russian and Chinese‑supplied aircraft conduct daily strikes targeting schools, clinics and prisons.

The latest ACLED figures, released in July 2026, record 100,114 deaths. In February 2024 the junta introduced forced conscription, drafting roughly 50,000 civilians; a 20‑year‑old deserter warned that conscripts are repeatedly sent to deadly fronts. China’s backing helped the army regain ground after rebel offensives in late 2023. The conflict fuels drug trafficking that finances both sides and has driven refugees into camps in Thailand and Bangladesh. Survivors in central Myit Chay describe a “generation decimated” as families mourn lost children and spouses.
