Fiambalá thermal complex to reopen after amoeba death
Overview
A 10-year-old child in Fiambalá, Catamarca, died from primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) caused by the Naegleria fowleri amoeba, often referred to as the “brain-eating amoeba.”
Following the death, the ANLIS-Malbrán National Reference Laboratory confirmed the diagnosis through real-time PCR testing of cerebrospinal fluid. In response, the Municipality of Fiambalá closed the local Thermal Complex to allow epidemiological teams to analyze water and surface samples for the microorganism.
The thermal complex is scheduled to reopen in approximately five days following the preventive closure. During the shutdown, the municipality conducted deep cleaning, disinfection, and fumigation of the thermal pools, bathrooms, dining areas, and common spaces. Provincial officials, including Governor Raúl Jalil, coordinated the rehabilitation of the site.
As part of a new sanitary protocol, authorities have advised visitors to use the pools primarily for relaxation and to avoid swimming, diving, or submerging the head to prevent contaminated water from entering the nasal passages. Health officials clarified that the infection is not transmissible between people.
