A controversy has emerged in Nagaland following a central government directive making the singing of all six stanzas of the national song, Vande Mataram, mandatory during school assemblies and official government programs. Civil society groups, including the Nagaland Baptist Church Council and the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), have opposed the directive. Critics argue the song’s devotional content may conflict with the religious beliefs of the state’s Christian-majority population and could impact constitutional safeguards under Article 371(A). In response, Deputy Chief Minister Y. Patton stated that “nobody is forced to sing, and nobody will be asked to sing, and nobody can stop anyone from singing.” The NSF has staged protests in Kohima, with members singing Christian hymns in opposition to the mandate. The controversy was further highlighted on March 2, when an instrumental version of the song was played for the Governor during the opening of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly. On September 3, Parliamentary Affairs Minister K. G. Kenye announced that the Nagaland Legislative Assembly committee has decided to withhold its report regarding the compulsory playing of Vande Mataram. Although the committee had completed its examination and adopted a report, the decision to delay its presentation is an interim measure pending the final outcome of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The state government has urged the NSF to end its agitation, stating the committee intends to revisit the matter while considering the collective sentiments of the people of Nagaland. On September 12, thousands of protesters gathered in Kohima for a rally organized by the Nagaland Joint Christian Forum (NJCF). The demonstration opposed both the potential compulsory singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ and proposed amendments to the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA).
