Nahdlatul Ulama organizational leadership and organizational reform
The Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) has established its leadership structure for the 2026–2031 term. Key appointments include Prof. Mohammad Nuh as Katib Aam (General Secretary) and Gus Ipang Wahid as Vice Chairman for Digital Native, Technology, Culture, and Communication, a role intended to modernize the organization’s digital outreach to younger generations. Following these appointments, the organization has begun a consolidation program to socialize new Articles of Association and Bylaws (AD/ART) established during the 35th Muktamar in Jombang. These reforms introduce standardized leadership election mechanisms, improved governance, and rules for internal dispute resolution. A significant provision in the new regulations prohibits the Rais Aam and the PBNU Chairperson from holding concurrent political positions. To implement these changes, PBNU is conducting socialization efforts, utilizing a ‘center-to-periphery’ model, targeting regional and branch boards (PWNU and PCNU) across Indonesia, including minority areas and locations outside Java. In a recent online meetings meeting with over 500 regional and overseas leaders, officials detailed plans to strengthen asset management and standardize elections. Amidst this consolidation, leadership has addressed controversies surrounding the 35th Muktamar. Vice Chairman Saifullah Yusuf denied allegations that corruption funds were used to finance the event, challenging accusers to provide evidence and stating that the organization is preparing legal action against those spreading unsubstantiated rumors. Additionally, regional roadshows, leaders in West Kalimantan have issued clarifications to ensure these changes are understood across all organizational levels. deny involvement in alleged political maneuvering during the congress.
