Namibia is intensifying preparations for upcoming oil and gas production to ensure economic stability and local integration. Between 2021 and 2025, the oil and gas industry attracted approximately N$74.4 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI), representing roughly 56% of the country’s total inflows. Bank of Namibia Governor Ebson Uanguta has emphasized the necessity of strengthening macroeconomic forecasting and financial stability monitoring. He noted that large investment inflows and future petroleum exports could impact inflation, the balance of payments, and economic growth. Consequently, the central bank is working to enhance staff capabilities to manage emerging risks, such as project concentration and foreign-currency volatility. Recent discussions at a Bank of Namibia symposium further highlighted the need for strong regulatory frameworks, domestic skill development, and the integration of the petroleum sector into the broader economy to maximize long-term benefits ahead of first oil production. To maximize domestic benefits, Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy Modestus Amutse has called for closer coordination between the government and financial institutions. This aim is institutions to assist local businesses in accessing the financing required to participate in the petroleum value chain. In a significant procurement shift, Namibia has awarded a TotalEnergies-led consortium a bulk fuel supply contract for 345.3 million liters of fuel, covering the period from November 2026 to January 2027. This agreement follows the conclusion of an exclusive arrangement with Vitol and is projected to save the government approximately $13.5 million.
