Narcotic vape trafficking in Indonesia

Overview

Law enforcement in Indonesia has conducted several operations targeting the trafficking of narcotic-laced vape pods and cartridges.

In late September, police in Medan dismantled a network suspected of importing contraband from Malaysia. The operation resulted in the arrest of three individuals and the seizure of 295 vibrating vape pods that had been concealed in soap boxes and a wall clock.

By October, the scale of interceptions increased. Following an inspection of a passenger bus at Bakauheni Port, the Indonesian Navy and local authorities seized 4,364 narcotic-laced cartridges valued at approximately Rp34.9 billion (US$1.94 million). Vice Admiral Edwin stated the operation aimed to prevent items from re-entering circulation, noting that syndicates are increasingly using land and sea routes through strategic transit hubs like Bakauheni Port.
