PM Modi attends SRCC centenary celebrations

Overview

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the centenary celebrations of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) at Delhi University on September 5, marking 100 years since the institution was founded in 1926 by Sir Shri Ram. To reach the venue, the Prime Minister traveled via the Delhi Metro, where he interacted with commuters and schoolchildren.

During the event, which coincided with Teachers’ Day, Modi released a Rs 100 commemorative coin. In his address, the Prime Minister praised the college’s legacy, referring to its alumni as “OGs” and noting that being an SRCC graduate is a “flex.” He specifically recalled the late Arun Jaitley as a notable alumnus. Reflecting on India’s economic progress, he revisited a metaphor from a 2013 visit regarding a glass being “half full of water and half with air,” contrasting past challenges with India’s current 7.8% quarterly growth and its transition from the “fragile five” to one of the world’s five largest economies.

Modi also addressed national security, stating that those spreading terrorism are on the “back foot” and warning that India would strike if any misadventure occurs, while noting improved peace in Jammu and Kashmir and the Northeast.

While many students found his use of contemporary language engaging, political opposition, including Congress leaders such as Kanhaiya Kumar, criticized the visit. They characterized the event as a campaign effort that failed to address pressing issues such as the education system and unemployment.

In separate engagements for Teachers’ Day, regional leaders paid tribute to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. In Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath honored 81 teachers, while Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also paid tribute.
