NASA has concluded its second Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) mission, a 378-day simulation of a Mars mission conducted at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Four volunteers, including commander Ross Elder, medical officer Ellen Ellis, science officer Matthew Montgomery, and flight engineer James Spicer, lived within the Mars Dune Alpha, a 160-square-meter 3D-printed habitat. The mission mission, which began on October 19, 2025, aimed to study the effects of isolation, confinement, and limited resources on human health and productivity. To replicate interplanetary conditions, the crew managed significant communication delays ranging from 22 to 44 minutes and experienced a two-week communications blackout. During the simulation, the crew performed tasks such as growing crops in simulated Martian soil, conducting medical assessments, maintaining habitat systems, and performing simulated spacewalks. Following their release from isolation, the crew members will participate in two weeks of evaluations and debriefings with scientists to share their findings. NASA intends to use the data gathered data regarding physical and behavioral health and resource management to support the Artemis program and prepare for human missions to Mars targeted for the 2030s. The agency also plans to launch the Moon and Mars Exploration Analog (MMEA) program in August 2027.
