NASA DAVINCI mission probe thermal testing

Overview

NASA has successfully completed thermal endurance testing on an engineering model of the DAVINCI (Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging) descent probe. The testing, conducted in Bedford, Pennsylvania, involved subjecting the capsule to six heating cycles that reached 465 °C to simulate the extreme conditions of the Venusian atmosphere.

Monitored by over 100 temperature sensors, the probe's titanium alloy shell and internal components showed no damage during the process. Jim Garvin, the mission lead investigator at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, described the experiment as a “huge success.” The mission aims to study the composition and structure of the Venusian atmosphere to better understand the planet's evolution and potential for past habitability.
