NASA missions are providing new geological data from the Martian surface. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) used its HiRISE camera to capture high-resolution images of gullies, documenting how gas escaping from beneath carbon dioxide ice moves sand and dust. These observations have prompted social media speculation about artificial structures, though scientists attribute these sightings to pareidolia. Subsequently, the Curiosity rover identified unusual geological pits within Gale Crater. Unlike typical Martian depressions caused by eroding mineral nodes, these pits are described by deputy scientist Michelle Minitti as being ‘extremely wide, strangely shallow and there is no trace of any stone or mineral node around them’. Researchers are currently utilizing three-dimensional digital modeling to investigate how these features relate to the erosion and climatic history of Mount Sharp. In the Valle Grande area of Mount Sharp, the rover is utilizing the Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) and Mastcam to capture overlapping, stereoscopic images of these formations. Scientists from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory are using this data to reconstruct three-dimensional digital models to determine if the pits are linked to the weathering of sulfate-rich rock layers or specific environmental cycles.
