The NASA Space Apps Challenge 2026 has begun opening registration and calls for participants in various international locations. NASA has officially opened registration for the global hackathon, which is scheduled for November 14-15. The event invites participants to use open space data to develop project ideas related to lunar exploration, Mars surface activities, and astrophysics. Registration is open to individuals regardless of coding experience, with options for in-person local events or a virtual ‘Universal Event’. Teams may consist of up to six members and will utilize open data from NASA and its 17 partner space agencies to address topics such as human returns to the Moon and mission planning for the deeper solar system. In Bahrain, the Bahrain Space Agency is hosting the event for the eighth consecutive year on November 14 and 15, 2026, across the University of Bahrain, Bahrain Polytechnic, and Kingdom University. Similarly, the challenge has opened participation calls in Costa Rica at the Universidad Fidélitas, where organizers aim for 300 in-person participants and at least 50% female participation. In Mexico, the hackathon will be held on November 14 and 15 in Boca del Río at the Universidad Veracruzana. Participants will develop technological solutions for topics including exoplanet studies, Mars settlements, and terrestrial applications such as using satellite data for weather monitoring and agricultural planning. Under this year’s theme, ‘The Next Frontier,’ the challenge involves utilizing open data from NASA and partner agencies to address topics like artificial intelligence and Moon and Mars research. In Turkey, local organizers are working to integrate students into space studies. Samet Karakaş, a local leader in Adana and a student at Adana Alparslan Türkeş Science and Technology University, stated the goal is to create an environment where students can collaborate with experts to solve actual space-related issues.
