Overview
NASA and associated researchers are advancing technologies to predict space weather and solar activity. Efforts include the development of the DAPHNE (Dynamic Atmosphere-Ionosphere Explorer) mission, which has entered Phase B to study interactions between Earth’s lower atmosphere and solar energy using two coordinated satellites.
In parallel, researchers from NASA, the New Jersey Institute of Technology, and Princeton University are developing artificial intelligence models to anticipate solar storms. One such model, known as EarlyDetect, utilizes data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory to identify changes in magnetic fields and acoustic waves. This AI can anticipate the emergence of solar active regions—which drive flares and coronal mass ejections—by approximately nine hours.
While these developments aim to protect satellite communications, GPS, and electrical grids, the AI technology is not yet ready for real-time operational use due to limitations such as false alarms and the inability to guarantee if an active region will result in a major eruption.
