National Polytechnic Institute and SEP institutional developments updates

The National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) has engaged in several institutional developments involving Mexican government bodies. The Mexican Senate and the IPN signed a collaboration agreement to share scientific, academic, and technological capabilities, with a focus on professionalizing legislators and public servants through various academic programs and research. Following this, the Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) launched a consultation process to allow students, academic staff, and support personnel at the IPN to express preferences for the institution’s General Directorate. This mechanism, directed by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, aims to identify leadership profiles for the next four years to promote transparency and democratic participation within the institute. In a separate initiative, the SEP has initiated a national consultation to determine the future of the Unit for the System for the Career of Teachers and School Staff (USICAMM). Secretary of Education Mario Delgado Carrillo stated that this process fulfills a commitment by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to eliminate USICAMM. The consultation involves a nationwide questionnaire for teachers, with results expected on November 5 to inform a reform initiative scheduled for Congress later this month. Some educators have criticized the process on social media, alleging that the questionnaire is a “simulation” and that the provided options limit meaningful participation or favor predetermined outcomes.
