Director Jon Turteltaub has confirmed that a third installment of the Disney adventure franchise, National Treasure, is in active development. During a live recording of the ‘National Treasure Hunt’ podcast in Philadelphia, Turteltaub stated, “It’s happening. You’re the first people I have said this out loud to. It’s finally real.” The project has reached a milestone with a completed screenplay that has received approval from both Turteltaub and Disney. The studio reportedly noted the script “sounds like a movie we can make,” and producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also expected to be involved. While the director characterized the current status as “Hollywood real,” implying that production remains subject to industry uncertainties, Nicolas Cage is slated to return as Benjamin Franklin Gates. Turteltaub indicated that Cage’s return is a central requirement for the film to proceed. Turteltaub expressed intentions to reunite as much of the original cast as possible, potentially including Justin Bartha and Diane Kruger. He also suggested that the long delay in producing a third installment was partly due to a polarized American political climate, noting that the new script may need to address modern political divisions and themes of patriotism to remain relevant. No official release date or specific plot details have been announced. This development follows previous statements from Cage in 2024 suggesting a third film was not in the works. The franchise’s original two films earned over $800 million worldwide, providing commercial incentive for the studio to continue the series.
