The National University of Tucumán (UNT) in Argentina initiated a process to elect new authorities following a Federal Court of Appeals ruling. The court confirmed that former rector Sergio Pagani was barred from running for a third consecutive term, a decision that cleared previous obstacles to university governance. By early September, the university scheduled a University Assembly to elect the rector and vice-rector for the 2026-2030 term. The assembly, expanded to 161 members under a new statute, featured two competing candidate formulas: Sergio Mohamed and Horacio Madkur, versus Miguel Cabrera and Virginia Abdala. The election was set to utilize the ‘Boleta Única Papel’ (BUP) system, with the newly elected officials expected to assume their duties on September 7. On September 3, the University Assembly held at the Centro Cultural Virla concluded with the election of Sergio Mohamed and Horacio Madkur for the 2026-2030 term. The Mohamed-Madkur formula secured a decisive victory with 146 votes, while the opposition pairing of Miguel Cabrera and Virginia Abdala received 11 votes. The election followed the implementation of the new University Statute, which expanded assembly membership to include representatives from non-teaching staff and pre-university schools. Following the results, Governor Osvaldo Jaldo expressed support for the new authorities. The incoming administration Sergio Mohamed and Horacio Madkur have since assumed their leadership roles. Mohamed outlined plans to continue the existing strategic plan, organize the budget, and collaborate with the provincial government to expand territorial reach. He noted that student enrollment from the interior has identified university financing as a primary challenge risen from 25% to 43% and indicated they will support protests regarding expressed a desire to increase access to public education.
