Central European nations are adjusting their military contributions to NATO’s eastern flank. In the Czech Republic, a Senate committee approved a proposal to lower the troop limits for 2027 and 2028. While Defense Minister Jaromír Zůna noted that actual troop numbers are not being cut, the lower ceiling reflects a transition from Swedish Gripen-JAS39 fighter jets to F-35s, which will end Czech participation in Baltic airspace surveillance. Slovakia has moved to support NATO’s ‘Eastern Sentry’ operation by approving the deployment of up to 101 military personnel. These troops, including command, control, and logistical elements, will be stationed primarily in Poland and Romania to monitor airspace and support integrated air and missile defense using radar systems and drones. Polish officials have welcomed this contribution. Regarding the broader security environment, European intelligence agencies report no immediate signs of a conventional Russian military attack on NATO member states. However, an anonymous EU official noted that Russia is actively conducting hybrid warfare, including cyberattacks, drone incursions, and disinformation campaigns, particularly targeting eastern EU borders. The Kremlin has dismissed reports regarding potential Russian aggression toward NATO as ‘scary stories’ that do not reflect reality.
