The biennial Exercise Northern Viking 2026 (NV26) commenced in Keflavik, Iceland, involving the U.S. Sixth Fleet and several NATO allies, including Belgium, Denmark, France, Norway, and Poland. The drills, which coincide with the 75th anniversary of the 1951 U.S.-Iceland bilateral defense agreement, focused on strengthening interoperability through anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures, and search and rescue operations. A central goal was securing the Greenland, Iceland, and United Kingdom (GIUK) gap to protect maritime communication lines. In a notable shift during the exercise, NATO allies conducted submarine detection maneuvers near Iceland without the participation of United States warships or anti-submarine patrol aircraft. This iteration, led by French Rear Admiral Nicolas Molitors, included Canadian naval vessels, German reconnaissance aircraft, Belgian fighter jets, and forces from France and Portugal. The operations focused on tracking Russian submarines in the GIUK gap to monitor movements from the Kola Peninsula and protect undersea infrastructure. While U.S. Navy personnel assisted in the planning and construction crews continue work on military infrastructure at Keflavik airport, the operational weight of the submarine detection and tracking maneuvers has shifted to European and Canadian forces. Icelandic Defense Chief Jónas Allansson observed that European and Canadian forces are increasingly taking the initiative in securing this critical North Atlantic region. Participating units also included the Polish minehunter ORP Mewa. These efforts remain focused on the strategically vital GIUK gap to protect undersea communication cables, energy infrastructure, and transatlantic shipping lanes.
