Natural disasters and management in Indonesia

Overview

In mid-September 2026, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported a series of incidents including forest and land fires in Sulawesi and Java, and the aftermath of an earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara. Regarding the earthquake, BNPB clarified that 94 deaths at evacuation sites were indirect, involving elderly refugees with chronic conditions such as stroke and diabetes mellitus.

By mid-October 2026, forest and land fires continued to affect Sulawesi, specifically in Minahasa, Palopo, Pinrang, and North Toraja, impacting plantations. Additionally, following flooding in Padang on October 10, the BNPB called for an urgent evaluation of the region’s Early Warning System (EWS) after devices failed to function. Investigations are ongoing to determine if the failure was due to technical issues, extreme weather, or vandalism.
