Overview

Tanzania announced a significant natural gas discovery at the Kasa-1X ST2 well in the offshore Mnazi Bay block, marking the country’s first major find since 2015. The discovery was made through a joint venture between the state-owned Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and the French company Maurel & Prom.

Estimates of the gas volume vary between stakeholders. The Tanzanian government reported an estimate of 223 billion cubic feet, while Maurel & Prom provided a slightly lower estimate of approximately 200 billion cubic feet. Officials noted that these figures do not yet constitute proven reserves or certified recoverable volumes, as the exact amount of extractable gas is still being determined.

The discovery is expected to support domestic energy security, electricity generation, and industrial growth. The well is projected to produce roughly 30 million cubic feet of gas per day for at least ten years, with initial production potentially beginning as early as November 2026. In response to the find, the Tanzanian government has expanded its petroleum exploration programme by signing four new exploration licences in various regions.
