NCAA student-athlete eligibility injunction

A preliminary injunction issued by U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney has granted certain NCAA Division I student-athletes an extra year of eligibility. The ruling specifically addresses athletes who began college during the 2022-2023 academic year, providing them with a fifth year of eligibility for the 2026-27 season to address perceived exclusions in the NCAA’s age-based eligibility model.

Individual programs have begun managing the impact of the ruling. Mississippi State and Southern Miss have welcomed back several players, including defensive players and offensive linemen, to bolster their rosters.

The injunction includes specific restrictions: athletes who did not enter the transfer portal during the original window cannot transfer under this order, and those who have signed professional contracts remain ineligible. Furthermore, returning players may only rejoin their former schools if roster spots are available. While the NCAA’s attempt to stay the injunction was denied, the decision has created roster management challenges for collegiate programs, particularly those already at scholarship limits.
