The NCIS television franchise is expanding through new spinoffs and significant character returns. ‘NCIS: New York’ premiered on October 6, featuring LL Cool J as Special Agent Sam Hanna. Following a personal tragedy, Hanna moves from Southern California to New York City to lead a new field office. The series, described as having a “darker, edgier, and more grounded tone,” includes Jennifer Beals as Robyn Wells, Scott Caan as Nick Schaeffer, and Brian Dietzen reprising his role as Dr. Jimmy Palmer. The show is designed to allow for franchise crossovers. During New York Comic Con, cast members including LL Cool J, Scott Caan, and Jennifer Beals teased upcoming character arcs and the potential for crossovers with the broader NCIS universe. LL Cool J indicated that the series will explore a redemption arc for Sam Hanna, involving “unfinished business and unresolved connections to New York City.” Recent episodes, such as ‘Carousel’, have focused on establishing team dynamics through investigations like the search for kidnapped children. In the prequel series ‘NCIS: Origins’, Mark Harmon has returned to his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in a full-time, on-camera capacity for season 3. The season utilizes a dual narrative: a present-day storyline featuring an older Gibbs living in retirement in Alaska, and 1990s sequences involving a younger Gibbs (played by Austin Stowell). The season premiere, ‘Don’t You Forget About Me’, explores why Gibbs leaves his peaceful retirement due to “ghosts from his past.” A major narrative milestone occurred in the episode ‘Return of the Mack’, which featured the first on-screen reunion of Gibbs and Tony DiNozzo in over a decade. In this episode, DiNozzo, now serving as Director of NCIS, assists Gibbs after the latter is shot by unknown assailants. Additionally, the flagship ‘NCIS’ continues with season 24, where recent episodes have focused on character Nick Torres confronting his past during an investigation involving a retired undercover identity.
