Nebraska immigration enforcement and detention expansion

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has implemented several measures to support federal immigration enforcement. Following an agreement to convert a state rehabilitative Work Ethic Camp into a 300-bed ICE detention facility, the state has received approximately $14.6 million for bed occupancy and equipment. While the facility began accepting detainees in November, renovations to reach full capacity are ongoing, and the daily population has fluctuated between 100 and 171 detainees.

These developments have drawn protests from demonstrators traveling from Omaha to McCook. Additionally, Governor Pillen has directed the Nebraska State Patrol to partner with ICE and authorized the use of a former state prison, referred to as the ‘Cornhusker Clink’, to hold detainees during federal deportation sweeps.

These enforcement actions come amid reports that the Governor’s family hog enterprise has utilized undocumented laborers for over a decade, with investigations indicating that at least 20 Pillen hog farms employed undocumented workers and several individuals faced charges for using fraudulent identification between 2015 and 2024.
