Neolithic archaeological discoveries in Turkey and Serbia

Overview

Recent archaeological research has highlighted significant Neolithic findings in the Balkans and Turkey. In Serbia, researchers from the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade and the Belgrade City Museum utilized microscopic and radiographic analysis to reclassify an artifact at the Museum of Mladenovac. Previously mistaken for an animal tooth bead, the object was identified as a 6,500-year-old human canine tooth used as a pendant, originating from the Vinča culture site in Jablanica.

Additionally, excavations in the Taş Tepeler complex at Karahantepe in southeastern Turkey have uncovered an 11,000-year-old statue. Directed by Professor Necmi Karul, the 2026 excavation season revealed a 70-centimeter sculpture depicting a metamorphic figure that fuses human and leopard characteristics.
