Following catastrophic flooding in Nepal that resulted in at least 1,294 deaths and thousands of missing persons, the international community and the Nepalese government have focused on the role of climate change in the disaster. India’s Ministry of External Affairs urged developed nations to lead emission reductions and provide financial and technological support to developing countries, noting that those historically responsible for the majority of emissions should assist in combating the climate crisis. India has also expressed solidarity with Nepal through rescue and reconstruction efforts. In response to the disaster, Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs established a new Environment Diplomacy Division. This division aims to institutionalize the nation’s climate priorities and improve coordination with international agencies. Scientific analysis from World Weather Attribution suggested that human-caused global warming and permafrost degradation likely contributed to the collapse of a Himalayan slope, which triggered the flooding. Recent developments indicate the death toll from the August 26 flooding has risen to over 1,400. The newly formed Climate Diplomacy Unit, headed by an under secretary, will focus on climate justice, cooperation between mountainous nations, and the development of early warning systems. Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to attend the UN General Assembly in New York to advocate for international support and climate justice, as the ministry seeks to make climate diplomacy a long-term institutional priority.
