The death toll from the glacier collapse near the Nepal-China border has risen to at least 472, with more than 1,400 people reported missing. Scientific analysis from the USGS indicates the initial disaster was triggered by a glacier collapse rather than an earthquake. The event released energy comparable to a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, causing debris to obstruct the Lhende Khola and Bhotekoshi rivers. The situation has escalated into a secondary crisis following the breach of a natural dam formed by landslide debris in the Tibet region. This breach released millions of cubic meters of water, prompting urgent evacuation orders for residents along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers. In response to rising water levels and the risk of further landslides or avalanches, helicopter and ground rescue operations have been temporarily suspended to ensure the safety of personnel. Among the missing are several Italian nationals and 517 foreign tourists, including citizens from India, Australia, the UK, and the US. Rescue efforts have successfully saved 1,545 individuals, but over 100 workers remain trapped in a hydroelectric power plant tunnel in the Rasuwa district. Over 13,000 security personnel have been mobilized for relief efforts. Chinese scientists describe the newly formed lake as being 150 meters long and 40 to 50 meters deep, containing between 1.5 and 2 million cubic meters of water. Officials warn that an additional 3 million cubic meters could flow into the lake, with the highest risk of overflow expected around September 1. Engineering teams are currently evaluating the possibility of digging a drainage channel to control the water flow from the unstable reservoir. Infrastructure damage remains severe, including the destruction of the Gyirong border crossing crossing, 35 vehicular bridges, 45 suspension bridges, and significant portions of the road network.
