Netanyahu-Ben-Gvir political rift

A political rift has emerged between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Ben-Gvir reported a breakdown in direct communication, claiming the Prime Minister has not responded to his phone calls for several weeks. He expressed feeling “insulted” by this silence and suggested that advisors in Netanyahu’s office may be encouraging the Prime Minister to distance himself from Ben-Gvir to avoid political damage.

The tension appears linked to broader coalition dynamics and electoral interests. Ben-Gvir has expressed concerns that Netanyahu might seek a broader government following upcoming elections that could exclude his Otzma Yehudit party in favor of a partnership with Gadi Eisenkot’s party.

Further complicating the relationship, leaked details from a meeting between Netanyahu and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich revealed discussions focused on coordinating the positions of the right-wing bloc. In response to perceived exclusion, Ben-Gvir has launched a campaign to increase his influence, specifically demanding the Defense Ministry portfolio. He has indicated that if these demands are rejected, he may use the situation to accuse the Prime Minister of exclusion and potentially pursue a unity government.
