Netflix released its seven-episode limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s ‘East of Eden’ on October 1, 2026. Set in California’s Salinas Valley and filmed on the South Island of New Zealand, the production spans from the American Civil War to the early years of World War I. Florence Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, an antiheroine whom the series portrays with significant psychological depth. While the original novel depicts Cathy as a sociopathic “monster” born without empathy, the adaptation explores her psychological unraveling, including struggles with drug use and a fractured sense of reality. This is illustrated through her interactions with an imaginary version of Charles that represents her inner thoughts. Created and co-showrun by Zoe Kazan, the series focuses on the Trask family saga and the biblical concept of ‘timshel’. Upon release, the miniseries received positive critical attention, earning an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. IndieWire has described the production as a ‘grand Netflix epic’. Following the series premiere in New York, Pugh garnered significant attention for her red carpet appearance in Vivienne Westwood. By its opening period, the series reached the number one spot on Netflix’s weekly English TV charts, recording 6.5 million views and approximately 45.5 million hours viewed. The series achieved significant international reach, appearing in the top ten in 80 countries and reaching the number one spot in 22 countries. The adaptation has sparked debate regarding its modern approach to Cathy Ames; while some viewers praise the added depth and agency, others criticize the deviation from the novel’s portrayal of her as a fundamentally evil figure. Kazan intended this creative choice to “explore the realities faced by women in the era.” Additionally, the production has triggered a ‘Netflix effect’ on the publishing industry, with Penguin Classics reporting a 200% increase in sales of the original novel since the series was announced. There are currently no plans for a second season, as the project is intended as a limited series.
