Netflix is reorganizing its gaming division, resulting in the closure of two development studios: Night School Studio in California and Moonloot Games in Helsinki. Night School, which was Netflix’s first studio acquisition in 2021, closed shortly after releasing the horror game ‘Unhinged’. Moonloot, founded by Netflix in 2022, is being shut down before releasing a game. The restructuring includes staff cuts and layoffs affecting specialized roles, such as accessibility leads. This move follows a series of studio shutdowns since 2024, including Boss Fight Entertainment and Team Blue, signaling a shift in the company’s video game strategy. Netflix is pivoting away from premium mobile indie titles to focus on four key pillars: games for children and families, party games, linear narrative content, and mainstream licensed titles. Additionally, the company is shifting its technical focus toward cloud streaming for television screens, utilizing smartphones as remote controllers. While these closures involve significant staff reductions, Netflix noted that its Finnish-based Next Games will continue operations.
