Netflix has released the first trailer for ‘The Altruists’, an eight-episode limited miniseries dramatizing the rise and fall of the cryptocurrency exchange FTX. The production explores the 2022 collapse that resulted in an approximately $8 billion deficit in customer funds. The series focuses on the relationship between former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, played by Anthony Boyle, and former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison, played by Julia Garner. The narrative traces their journey from idealistic entrepreneurs to central figures in a massive financial scandal. Inspired by investigative reporting from New York Magazine, the show aims to examine the psychological complexities and human ambitions behind the financial crimes. The production is led by creators Graham Moore and Jacqueline Hoyt, with involvement from Higher Ground Productions. Following the trailer release, the series has faced criticism from former FTX Chief Operating Officer Constance Wang. Wang has characterized the show’s portrayal of Bankman-Fried and Ellison as a ‘toxic love story’ as ‘laughable’, arguing that Bankman-Fried’s focus was on global impact rather than personal relationships. Wang, who is also depicted in the series, expressed discomfort with the dramatization, noting that many employees were unaware the two were dating during the period in question. Upon the series' release in November 2026, actress Julia Garner described the experience of portraying a character involved in such a rapid rise and fall as both ‘provocative and enriching.’
