Netflix Mr. T documentary controversy

Netflix has released the 48-minute documentary ‘Untold Mr. T: I Pity the Fool’, directed by Scott Weintrob. The film traces Laurence Tureaud’s journey from his upbringing in Chicago and his military service to his rise as an 1980s icon in ‘Rocky III’ and ‘The A-Team’, as well as his professional wrestling career.

The production explores the origins of his distinctive aesthetic, noting it was inspired by West African Mandinka warriors, and examines the work ethic that led him from working as a bouncer to Hollywood stardom. It also covers his personal life, including his marriage to Phyllis Clark and his children. The film notes that his daughter, Erica Clark, transitioned from a career as a special education teacher to pursuing comedy and the entertainment industry, despite her father’s initial preference for a more traditional path.

Following the release, Mr. T has criticized the documentary, alleging that the filmmakers attempted to “control the narrative” and present him in a negative light. He described the documentary as “garbage,” expressing frustration that the film omitted significant aspects of his life, such as his faith and charitable activities. He specifically noted that key figures, such as his pastor, received minimal screen time despite their importance to his faith.

Mr. T further claimed he was not allowed to review the footage before the final edit and criticized the inclusion of negative commentary from a former agent. While the film features insights from individuals such as actor Terry Crews and Erica Clark, the actor maintains that the depiction does not accurately reflect his true character or his community roots.
