Netflix is producing a fantasy adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s ‘Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew’, directed by and co-written by Greta Gerwig. This prequel depicts the creation of Narnia and follows children Digory and Polly, played by David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell, as they travel between worlds. The film features a reported production budget of $280 million and shifts the setting from Victorian London to the post-war 1950s. The cast includes Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew, Emma Mackey as Jadis, Carey Mulligan, Denise Gough, and Ciarán Hinds, with Meryl Streep providing the voice for Aslan. This casting has sparked significant theological debate. Critics like Ted Baehr have described the decision as a “tremendous heresy” and “creative vandalism” because Aslan’s allegorical role as Jesus Christ is traditionally male. While some reports suggest the character will retain a masculine identity through a deep voice, others argue the decision to use a female actor represents a departure from Lewis’s established views on gender and metaphysics. The organization One Million Moms has launched a ~~boycott,~~ boycott and petition, claiming the film is “not a movie Christians want to ~~see.”~~ see” and accusing the production of pushing a “leftist agenda.” Recent developments include a record-breaking trailer release, which garnered 481.3 million views in seven days, surpassing the initial viewership of ‘Barbie’. The trailer also marked a music milestone as the first time Led Zeppelin permitted the use of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ in a film trailer. The Motion Picture Association has assigned the film a PG ~~rating due to fantasy action, brief violence, and smoking.~~ rating. Liam Neeson, who voiced Aslan in previous film trilogies, expressed support for Meryl Streep’s casting, stating, “Well, if you’re gonna make Christ a lady, nobody better than Meryl.” The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on February 12, 2027, followed by a Netflix debut on April 2, 2027.
