Following its October 8, 2026, release, the Netflix limited series ‘Below’ has achieved significant international popularity. The six-part supernatural mystery thriller, starring Josh Hartnett ~~as fisherman Calvin Penney,~~ and Charlie Heaton, has reached the number one spot on viewership charts in ~~several~~ 70 countries, including the United States, Hungary, France, and the Czech Republic. In the Netherlands, the series reached the number two position. Set in the remote Newfoundland community of Snook’s Arm, the series follows fisherman Calvin Penney as he attempts to protect his family and local way of life from an unidentified sea creature. To enhance the realism of the marine biology elements, the production utilized the Ocean Sciences Centre in Newfoundland and incorporated scientific consultation. While the series has become a global hit, some critics have noted that the narrative attempts to address various complex themes—including climate change, corporate influence, and mysterious epidemics—without providing a deep exploration of each subject. Regarding the series' conclusion, showrunner Jesse McKeown described the ending as a reprieve rather than a total resolution. While a character named Dr. Fonda explains that the creature died after releasing its eggs, the final shot depicts giant floating icebergs, implying they may be squid nests. Although a second season has not been officially planned, the series leaves questions regarding the survival of a baby squid seen in a laboratory setting.
