By 24 September 2026, ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’ had achieved significant global streaming success, reaching the number one spot in approximately 60 countries, including Spain and Canada. The eight-episode production, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, depicts the 1892 axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, portraying Lizzie Borden and maid Maggie Sullivan as the perpetrators. The series has garnered 12.1 million views in its first week and has sparked discussions regarding its creative liberties. Co-showrunner Ian Brennan defended the use of contemporary soundtracks, stating the music prevents the period piece from feeling like a ‘stuffy diorama’ and helps connect historical subjects to the present day. In addition to its portrayal of themes like female rage, the production has faced criticism for inaccuracies and controversial scenes, such as a graphic sequence involving food poisoning. The series has also drawn attention in Portugal due to xenophobic references made by characters in the second and third episodes regarding Portuguese immigrant communities in Fall River, Massachusetts. Following the release, rumors have emerged suggesting that the fifth season of the true-crime anthology may focus on John Wayne Gacy. Following the Netflix release, further historical debate has emerged regarding the omission of Lizzie Borden’s community involvement, such as her participation in the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union and her charitable work. Critics also noted that while the series depicts a strained relationship between Lizzie and her sister Emma, historical records suggest the two were close and lived together for much of their lives. Meanwhile, the case continues to inspire artistic works, such as the UK-based folk meta jukebox musical ‘Bury the Hatchet’ by the Out of the Forest Theatre Company.
