Netherlands natural gas sector instability

Overview

The Netherlands is experiencing significant shifts in its natural gas sector, driven by both geopolitical tensions and the domestic energy transition.

Rising fuel prices, linked to the Iran-Iraq war and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, have accelerated the decline of gas stations. Industry experts warn that the number of stations could drop from approximately 4,000 to 2,000 within five to ten years. Border stations are particularly vulnerable as consumers cross into Belgium or Germany to avoid high Dutch excise duties.

Simultaneously, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) has warned that natural gas transport tariffs could quadruple by 2050. As the population transitions to sustainable energy, the fixed costs of maintaining and decommissioning gas infrastructure must be shared by a shrinking pool of users. This could increase annual transport costs for an average household from 200 euros to 790 euros, placing a disproportionate financial burden on those unable to electrify immediately.
